[Two people]

I’ve seen you here a million times and always wished you’d say something.

I haven’t been in here a million times.

Well, I didn’t mean that literally.

What did you want me to say?

Oh, nothing particular…“hello” is always a great opener.

You could have said “hello,” too.

Sure, but you always seem to be so focused on whatever you’re doing.

I always am.

So for all I know, you never noticed me, and if you did you didn’t give me a second thought, and if you did give me a second thought it was because you noticed me and you weren’t interested, or maybe you looked at me when I wasn’t looking at you and so I didn’t know you had noticed me and even then how would I know if you were noticing me as someone to notice or just noticing me as a solid object who is taking up space.

I am very involved in what’s in front of me.

What does that mean?

I am a sorcerer.

Oh.

That’s the typical response when I say that.

It’s not every day you meet a…are you free-lance, or…?

Yes, for now.

I see. Are you making fun of me?

No. I’m a sorcerer. I’m studying these enchantments. It takes a helluva lot of effort and concentration and personal investment to make these things work.

I can only imagine.

It’s one thing to have the words in front of you, it’s another thing entirely to make them work for you in the way you want them to work.

I suppose you’re right.

You think I’m crazy.

Not at all. Not at all.

You said that twice, like an incantation. That either means you do indeed think I’m crazy and want to make me believe you don’t think I’m crazy by repeating words to the otherwise or you are repeating it to make yourself believe.

I don’t think you’re crazy. I’ll bet you’re the best when it comes to spells.

“Enchantments.”

Right. Can you make a living as a sorcerer?

I get by. And thank you for thinking I’m not crazy, even if it turns out you’re just saying it to be polite.

But I’m the one who’s always wished you’d say something to me.

And today you said something to me.

That’s true.

After all this time.

Yes. I don’t know what possessed me.
