Behemoth the cat, from Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, is perhaps one of the most entertaining characters in Russian Literature. He is black and mischievous, but he is also the size of a fat child, he walks on two feet, speaks, and has a penchant for violence, vodka, pistols, chess, and obnoxious sarcasm. Behemoth is an essential personality in Woland's (Satan's) retinue but he is also the least respected of the group- perhaps because he is a cat, though perhaps it is due to his almost constant stream of consistently bad jokes.
